Youngs Scientist Workshop 2018 - The last of its kind

The Young Scientists Workshop is an important event for young scientists within the framework of the promotion of young scientists in zoonoses research by the National Research Platform for Zoonoses. The last time this took place was in 2018 from 15-16 October 2018 on the premises of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), Berlin-Jungfernheide.

As an instrument for the promotion of interdisciplinary competences among young scientists, the National Research Platform for Zoonoses has offered an annual workshop for young scientists in recent years. In 2018, two parallel sessions were again offered: "Scientific Writing" and "Presenting (in) Science - How to own the stage on international conferences". In 2018, 28 young scientists from various German universities, university hospitals and federal research institutions took up this offer.

The session "Scientific Writing" provided participants with important information on an everyday task in science, the writing of scientific texts, in theoretical and practical exercises. Even if scientific writing is required when writing one's own doctoral thesis, publishing research results or preparing an abstract or a poster for events by young scientists, this skill is often insufficiently taught. The workshop provided information on how to create, structure and structure a scientific concept and how to use adequate formulations. In addition, optimization strategies regarding correct literature research were discussed. The trainer's many years of experience enabled him to provide participants with valuable tips and advice.

Just as important as the presentation of one's own work on paper is the presentation of one's own research in lectures at (international) events. The workshop "Presenting (in) Science - How to own the stage on international conferences" aimed to convey professionalism, sovereignty and confidence to the participants during such presentations. The individual aspects were presented and practiced in a combination of theoretical lectures and subsequent practical exercises by two specially trained trainers.

At the end of each day of the event, dinners were again held for all participants together with the speaker of the workshop.
At this point, special thanks are due to those responsible at BfR for the courteous and very pleasant cooperation.

Continued focus on young researchers

This workshop marks the end of the format "Doctoral Students' Workshop" [2010-2018]. On behalf of the National Research Platform for Zoonoses we would like to thank all participants and speakers of the past 8 years.
However, the promotion of young scientists remains a central concern of the Zoonoses Platform. In addition to the Junior Scientist Zoonoses Meeting, the Junior Scientist Breakfast and the awarding of the Poster Prize at the annual symposium, from next year on the support will offer young scientists the opportunity to acquire the One Health Certificate. In addition, a further event for young scientists will be added, the concept of which is currently being worked on.
